Hand Engraving: Scrollwork

Three days in a row, five hours a day. Our booking system only shows the start day.

Lines and letters got you started. Scrollwork is where engraving turns into art.

Those curling vines and leafy flourishes on antique silver, custom firearms, and heirloom jewelry all come from the same vocabulary. It isn't just harder lines. It's a different way of moving a graver through metal, and it's genuinely hard to learn from a book.

Who it's for

  • You've taken our Intro to Hand Engraving and want to keep going
  • You can cut clean lines and letters already
  • You're a jeweler who wants real decorative range on custom work

What you'll learn

  • Scroll layout and the geometry underneath classical scrolls
  • Rotating your work to cut smooth curves
  • Backbones and leaves, the building blocks of every scroll
  • Shading cuts that add depth
  • Borders and frames that pull a composition together
  • Transferring complex designs onto flat and curved surfaces
  • Fixing your own cuts as you go

We teach the reasoning behind classical scroll construction so you can design your own instead of tracing templates.

How the days go Day 1 is layout and practice plates. Days 2 and 3 you design and cut a full scrollwork piece in the metal of your choice.

Do I need experience? Yes. Our Intro to Hand Engraving or equivalent, and you should be comfortable sharpening your own graver.

What it costs All tools, gravers, practice plates, and layout materials are included. Project metal is paid at the end, copper, brass, or sterling.

What to bring Any scrollwork you love. Antique pieces, photos, screenshots. We'll help you turn it into something you can actually cut.
