Sand Casting

Three hours, red clay, and molten metal. Yes, really.

Sand casting is the simplest kind of casting there is. Press an object into clay, melt some scrap, pour it, and a few minutes later you're holding a metal copy. Bring odd little things to press in and see what happens.

What you'll learn

  • Building a mold out of red clay
  • Packing and venting the frame so the metal fills properly
  • Casting with an oxygen and propane torch
  • Turning a jar of scrap silver into something worth wearing
  • Cleaning up and finishing your castings

Do I need experience? None. Bring a few small objects, under 2 inches across, to use as impressions. If you're casting an existing ring, keep it simple and make sure it has no undercuts.

What it costs Finished pieces are weighed and charged by metal type. Silver and bronze are both on hand.

What to wear Hair back, closed-toed shoes, no flowing sleeves. Bring your own safety glasses if you prefer them, and a water bottle.
