Sand casting is the oldest trick in the book and still the most satisfying. Press an object into packed sand, pull it out, pour metal into the hollow it left.

What's in it

• 3 inch ceramic melting dish with a holder
• Casting flask
• 1 pound of red casting clay
• 1 pound of borax, which cleans the metal and helps it pour
• Talc, the parting agent that keeps the two halves of the mold from sticking
• Putty knife, small hammer and a paint brush

Worth knowing: sand casting gives you a slightly rough surface, so it is wonderful for decorative pieces and not the right choice for anything that has to be mechanically precise.
