Beginner's Guide to Metalsmithing Tools

One of the most common questions we get from new students is: "Do I need to bring my own tools?" The short answer is no. At B Golden Jewelry School, you'll have full access to all the tools and equipment in our studio during class. But understanding the basic tools of metalsmithing (silversmithing) will help you get more out of your classes and know what to invest in if you decide to set up your own bench at home.

The Essentials

Jeweler's Saw and Blades Used to cut precise shapes out of sheet metal. It takes a little practice to get comfortable with, but once you do, it opens up endless design possibilities.

Files Metal files come in different shapes (flat, half-round, needle) and are used to refine edges, smooth surfaces, and shape metal after cutting.

Soldering Torch The torch is the heart of metalsmithing (silversmithing). It heats metal to the point where solder flows, joining pieces together permanently. We teach proper torch safety in every class.

Pliers Flat-nose, round-nose, and chain-nose pliers are used to bend, shape, and hold metal while you work.

Flex Shaft (Rotary Tool) A flexible shaft machine is like a jeweler's drill. It's used for drilling, grinding, polishing, and setting stones. Think of it as the Swiss Army knife of the jewelry bench.

Burnisher A smooth, hardened steel tool used to push metal over a stone in bezel setting. Simple but essential.

Polishing Tools From sandpaper and polishing wheels to liver of sulfur for patina, finishing is what takes a piece from raw to refined.

Do You Need to Buy Tools Right Away?

Not at all. We recommend taking a few classes first to figure out which techniques you love before investing in your own setup. When you're ready, we've made it easy. B Golden carries curated kits for the most popular techniques, including a hand tool kit, a soldering kit, and kits for lost wax casting and sand casting. Our instructors are also happy to guide you on what to buy and where to get it.

Curious to try these tools in person? Book a jewelry-making class and get hands-on access to our fully equipped studio.
