Jewelry Making Classes in Salt Lake City: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Class
If you’ve ever been curious about making your own jewelry — a ring, a pendant, a pair of earrings — you’re not alone. Jewelry-making classes are one of the fastest-growing creative hobbies, and Salt Lake City has some great options. At B Golden Jewelry School, we’ve been teaching people how to make jewelry since 2009, and we’ve helped thousands of students go from total beginner to confident jewelry artist.
What Kinds of Jewelry Making Classes Are Available?
There are a lot more options than most people realize. Here’s a quick overview of the main types of jewelry classes we offer:
Metalsmithing (also called silversmithing) is the foundation of jewelry making. You’ll learn to cut, shape, solder, and finish silver into rings, pendants, and more. Our Intro to Metalsmithing class is where most beginners start — you’ll walk out with a finished bezel-set ring or pendant. It costs $148 and takes about 3 hours.
Lapidary is the art of cutting and polishing stones. If you love rocks, this is your class. Our Intro to Lapidary class ($115) teaches you to shape and polish your own cabochon that you can later set into a piece of jewelry.
Lost wax casting lets you carve a design in wax, then cast it in metal. It’s how many intricate, detailed jewelry pieces are made. Our casting class is $499 and covers the entire process over multiple sessions.
We also offer enameling, hand engraving, stone setting, sand casting, cloissoné, and more — 29+ different classes in all.
Do I Need Any Experience?
Nope. Our intro-level classes assume you’ve never touched a jeweler’s torch or a saw frame. We keep class sizes small, so every student gets individual attention. Many of our students tell us they were nervous before their first class but felt completely comfortable within the first 30 minutes.
How Much Do Jewelry Classes Cost?
Our classes range from $115 for a beginner intro class to $599 for multi-day advanced workshops. Most beginners spend between $115 and $189 for their first class. All tools and basic materials are included in the price of some of the classes — you don’t need to buy anything extra to get started.
Which Class Should I Take First?
If you’re brand new, we recommend Intro to Metalsmithing ($148). It gives you the core skills — sawing, filing, soldering, and finishing — that apply to almost every other type of jewelry making. From there, most students branch out into whatever excites them most: the Half Day Metalsmithing, Full Day Metalsmithing, 4 Day Metalsmithing, lapidary, casting, enameling, or hand engraving.
If you’re specifically interested in stones, you could also start with Intro to Lapidary ($115). And if you want to try both in one day, our Combo Lapidary & Metalsmithing class ($189) is a popular choice.
Can I Make a Wedding Ring?
Yes! This is one of the most meaningful things our students do. Lots of couples come in to make each other’s wedding rings, and some people make their own. Our lost wax casting class gives you the skills you need, and our instructors can help you plan personalized designs for the ring design you have in mind. You can walk away with finished bands!
Is This a Good Date Night or Group Activity?
Absolutely. Jewelry-making classes are one of the most popular date-night activities in Salt Lake City. We also host private parties for birthdays, bachelorette parties, and corporate team building. There’s something special about making something with your hands alongside the people you care about.
What If I Want to Keep Making Jewelry After Class?
That’s where our studio rental and membership program comes in. Once you’ve completed 20 hours of class time, you can rent studio time at $15/hour or get a full membership with 24/7 access for $350/month. Our studio has everything you need — soldering stations, a rolling mill, buffing machines, rock saws, and more.
We also have a full retail tool store where you can buy everything you need to set up your own studio at home, from beginner starter kits to professional-grade Pepetools and Fretz hammers.
